Institutional datasheet
Kenya is an East African jurisdiction that hosts the headquarters of ATIDI (African Trade and Investment Development Insurance) and maintains a national Business Registration Service for companies. This datasheet records institutional identity, FATF increased monitoring posture, register pointers and sanctions orientation.
Jurisdiction identity and official support posture
Kenya does not appear in the Berne Union member directory as the domicile of a single-name national ECA comparable to the classic bilateral pattern. The directory does list ATIDI with country label Kenya.
ATIDI's Berne Union member profile states that ATIDI was founded in 2001 by African States to cover trade and investment risks of companies doing business in Africa, that it predominantly provides political risk, credit insurance and surety insurance, and that it joined the Berne Union in 2012, with its published address at Kenya Re Towers, Upperhill, Nairobi. Kenya is listed among ATIDI's African member countries on that page. ATIDI is therefore a multilateral risk insurer headquartered in Nairobi, not a bilateral Kenyan export credit agency operating under the OECD Arrangement.
Perils listed on ATIDI's Berne Union page include expropriation, arbitral award default, transfer restriction, mobile assets, war, civil disturbance, unfair calling of bonds, embargo and comprehensive non-payment. Those peril labels map to political risk insurance and trade credit categories for desks assessing African risk transfer; they are not Kenya-sovereign guarantees.
FATF and sanctions list posture
Kenya appears on the FATF list of jurisdictions under increased monitoring as reproduced in HM Treasury's June 2026 Money Laundering Advisory Notice. Increased monitoring is a jurisdiction-level AML assessment outcome relevant to financial-crime governance; it is not a sanctions designation and does not substitute for transaction-level due diligence. UN, UK, EU or US programmes can still designate Kenyan persons or entities, so sanctions screening against the applicable consolidated lists remains party-based and precedes credit-file reliance. This datasheet does not inventory Kenya-related designations.
Company and beneficial-ownership register notes
Kenya's Business Registration Service (BRS) describes itself as a one-stop shop for business support services. Published service areas include the Companies Registry, the Official Receiver in insolvency, the collateral registry (MPSR) and the Hire Purchase Registry, and BRS states that name reservation and business registration have been merged into one online step. A public beneficial-ownership register with open extracts is not described in the BRS or Berne Union sources used for this datasheet, so beneficial-ownership public-access posture for Kenya is recorded as an open item pending citation of the competent authority pages.
Summary
Institutional mapping for Kenya centres on ATIDI's multilateral political risk and trade credit insurance capacity headquartered in Nairobi, the Business Registration Service as the company registry channel, and Kenya's presence on the FATF increased monitoring list as reproduced by HM Treasury, which sits alongside rather than in place of party-based sanctions screening.
