Institutional datasheet

Nigeria is a West African jurisdiction whose official export credit agency is the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM). This datasheet records NEXIM's mandate, regional insurance pointers, FATF list posture and register evidence limits.

Official export credit: NEXIM

NEXIM states that it was established by Act 38 of 1991 as an export credit agency with a share capital of NGN 50 billion held equally by the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated and the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Bank publishes that it provides short and medium-term loans to Nigerian exporters, short-term guarantees for loans granted by Nigerian banks to exporters, and credit insurance against political and commercial risks in the event of non-payment by foreign buyers. It also serves as the government's National Guarantor under the ECOWAS Inter-state Road Transit programme.

NEXIM's FAQs state that the Bank is 100 percent government owned, operates as a development finance institution that does not accept customer deposits, and plays a complementary role to commercial banks by targeting underserved export segments that commercial banks initially find unattractive or too risky. Statutory functions listed include export credit guarantee and insurance services, credit in local and foreign currencies in support of exports, establishment and management of export-related funds, and trade information and export advisory services. Those functions map to export credit guarantee and official credit insurance tools as framed by the Bank.

Regional Berne Union context

NEXIM does not appear as a named member in the Berne Union member directory. Nigeria is, however, listed among the African member countries of ATIDI (African Trade and Investment Development Insurance) on ATIDI's Berne Union member page. ATIDI is a multilateral risk insurer headquartered in Nairobi whose published perils map to political risk insurance and trade credit categories, and it is institutionally distinct from NEXIM's national mandate.

FATF and sanctions list posture

Nigeria does not appear on the FATF increased monitoring or call for action lists as reproduced in HM Treasury's June 2026 Money Laundering Advisory Notice. List status is an AML assessment outcome, not a sanctions designation. UN, UK, EU or US programmes can still designate Nigerian persons or entities, so sanctions screening against the applicable consolidated lists remains party-based and precedes credit-file reliance. This datasheet does not inventory Nigeria-related designations.

Company and beneficial-ownership register notes

Nigerian company registration is administered by the Corporate Affairs Commission under the Companies and Allied Matters Act. Public-access mechanics for company and beneficial-ownership records, including which fields are open to the general public, are not described in the NEXIM or Berne Union sources used for this datasheet, so register public-access posture for Nigeria is recorded as an open item pending citation of the competent authority pages.

Summary

Institutional mapping for Nigeria centres on NEXIM's statutory export credit, guarantee and insurance mandate under joint Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated and Central Bank of Nigeria ownership, ATIDI membership as the regional multilateral insurance pointer, and absence from the FATF public lists as reproduced by HM Treasury. Register detail rests on primary Nigerian official publications, which this datasheet does not reproduce.
